Job Purpose

The Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation, control, automation, and SCADA systems. The role ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of plant operations while maintaining compliance with company standards, industry regulations, and HSE requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical

  • Design, review, and optimize instrumentation and control systems for plant facilities and industrial processes.
  • Develop and review instrumentation specifications, control philosophies, P&IDs, instrument data sheets, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, and cable schedules.
  • Select, specify, and evaluate field instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical instruments, and control valves.
  • Review vendor documentation and ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
  • Support engineering studies, technical evaluations, and system modifications to improve plant performance and reliability.

Installation & Commissioning

  • Supervise the installation, testing, calibration, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform loop checking, functional testing, cause-and-effect verification, and control system validation.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams during project execution.
  • Ensure all commissioning activities are completed safely and in accordance with approved procedures.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Monitor the performance and reliability of instrumentation, PLC, DCS, SCADA, and automation systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrumentation and control system failures to minimize downtime.
  • Develop preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies for instrumentation assets.
  • Coordinate instrument calibration programs and maintain calibration records.
  • Support plant shutdowns, turnarounds, and major maintenance activities.

Automation & Control Systems

  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, and industrial communication networks.
  • Support control system upgrades, cybersecurity initiatives, and digital transformation projects.
  • Optimize process control strategies to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and energy performance.

Quality, HSE & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, HSE requirements, and applicable international standards (IEC, ISA, ISO, NFPA, etc.).
  • Participate in HAZOP, SIL assessments, FAT, SAT, risk assessments, and technical audits.
  • Ensure all engineering documentation is accurate, current, and properly controlled.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all work is performed in accordance with approved safe work practices.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare technical reports, maintenance records, engineering calculations, and commissioning documentation.
  • Maintain instrument registers, asset databases, and engineering documentation.
  • Provide technical recommendations for equipment upgrades, replacements, and lifecycle management.
  • Support budget planning, spare parts management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience

  • 3–7 years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering within power generation, renewable energy, water desalination, oil & gas, industrial plants, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in commissioning, maintenance, or project execution is preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, and industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with major control platforms such as Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Emerson, or Rockwell Automation.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, OPC, Foundation Fieldbus, HART).
  • Experience with instrument calibration, control valves, transmitters, analyzers, and field devices.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CMMS/ERP systems (SAP, Maximo, or equivalent).
